How to write a biography—or autobiography
Five steps to help you record your life story
When my publisher approached me about ghostwriting a biography, I responded with, “But I write fiction.”
A few days later they introduced me to an entrepreneur and motivational speaker who helps others “live a beautiful life.” The book would chronicle her rise from abuse and poverty to wife, mother, business owner, and international speaker. We sat down and talked about what it would take to put her story on paper, in her own words.
Once published, I got another call asking if I’d be willing to ghostwrite a second biography, this one about a YouTube celebrity. Our introductory meeting included a few magic tricks, jokes about porta-potties, and ended with me taking possession of all of his journals.
Before these experiences, I’d published five of my own novels, and had written my grandmother’s life history. Apparently, this was enough book-writing experience to take on a biography or two.
While each experience began and ended differently, there are some key factors to keep in mind when you begin to write a biographical story.
