Set small, attainable goals, simple, silly goals

Setting goals amid the uncertainty of 2021 can feel like standing at a crossroads.
Setting goals amid uncertainty can help you focus on the things you have control over—and to help you enjoy the simple things in life.

As I looks back at 2020 I have to wonder, where do we go from here? How do we set goals for an uncertain future — to make solid plans for a year that looks as uncertain, if not more so, than the year it preceded?

As I contemplate the way forward, I’m reminded of a time several years ago when I sat alone in a city park watching families picnic, children play with one another, and couples hold hands. Laughter rang out but my heart held something more solemn: Uncertainty and disconnect? I had recently left my spouse. My kids were currently in school and I sat alone wondering what to do next, trying to plan for an uncertain tomorrow—and the foreseeable future. I wasn’t even sure I remembered who I was anymore, not after many stifling years in a marriage I’d known for some time couldn’t possibly survive.

And then I got a message from a friend who I hadn’t seen in years, saying, “I just heard and I’m so sorry.”

In a way it was comforting that word about my impending divorce was getting around— and yet it made my uncertain future more real and raw.

This old friend continued by saying, “When I went through my divorce, I had to set goals to keep me going. But nothing too elaborate. They were small, attainable goals, simple, silly goals.”
